Do You Need a Car in Croatia?
When a Rental Car Helps
A rental car can be useful for rural accommodation, multi-stop itineraries, smaller places and trips beyond major cities. Check parking and driving times against your planned route.
When Public Transport May Be Enough
Public transport may be enough for city-centre stays, routes with suitable bus and passenger ferry connections, or organised excursions. Check the bus, train and ferry options for your dates and route.
If it suits your route, consider renting a car only for the road-trip part of your holiday and using other transport for city stays.

What to Check Before Booking
Check the terms of your specific offer before booking:
- Total price: what is included and which additional fees may apply.
- Deposit and cards: the security deposit and accepted payment cards.
- Insurance: the excess and coverage exclusions.
- How protection works: distinguish supplier protection from third-party reimbursement cover, where offered. Reimbursement cover may require payment first, followed by a claim; check the policy, claim process and required documents.
- Mileage and fuel: the included mileage and fuel policy.
- Extras: charges for an additional driver, child seat and other extras.
- Changes and collection: cancellation terms and conditions for late collection.

Croatia Car Rental Tips (Quick Guide)
Age, card & deposit: Many suppliers require 21–23+ and a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit. Debit cards may be restricted.
One-way rentals: Usually possible inside Croatia (fee applies). Compare both directions; fees can differ by route.
Ferries & islands: Many suppliers allow ferries only if notified in advance; insurance coverage can change. Always confirm in your booking.
Borders: Trips to Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro are often allowed with extra documentation/fee. Check “cross-border” terms on your voucher.
Parking in old towns: Historic centers (e.g., Dubrovnik) have limited/expensive parking. Book accommodation with parking or use park-and-ride.
Summer traffic: Saturdays in July–August are busy on the A1. If possible, pick up/return Sun–Fri or use a city office.
Fuel & tolls: Croatia uses motorway tolls; keep your ticket and pay at exits. Check fuel policy (full-to-full preferred).
Damage check: Photograph the car at pick-up/return (wheels, bumpers, roof, interior). Keep all paperwork.
FAQ
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
EU/EEA licences are usually accepted without an IDP. For non-EU licences or those not in Latin script, many suppliers recommend one. Always check the supplier’s terms during booking.
Can I take a rental car on a ferry to the islands?
Often yes, but you must inform the supplier in advance and confirm insurance coverage. Some brands charge an extra fee or exclude certain routes.
Are cross-border trips allowed (Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro)?
Frequently allowed with an added cross-border fee and documents (e.g., a “green card”). Confirm in your booking voucher.
Can I do a one-way rental (e.g., Split → Dubrovnik)?
Usually possible. A one-way fee may apply and can differ by direction. Compare both options before booking.
What about deposits and payment cards?
Most suppliers require a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Some accept debit cards with extra insurance; others don’t. Check payment terms carefully.
Are helmets included with scooter rentals?
Yes, typically at least one helmet is included. Ask about a second helmet, top case, and any mileage limits.
Is parking difficult in historic centers?
Yes. It’s best to choose accommodation with on-site parking or park outside the old town and walk in.
